Background

The City of Durham’s Cultural and Public Art Program, in collaboration with Parking Services, is launching the Civic Art in Public Environments (CAPE) Pilot Program. This initiative aims to integrate public art into Durham's civic life and infrastructure, enhancing public spaces while fostering community engagement. The program seeks to embed a local artist within municipal operations for a one-year residency focused on beautifying public parking spaces through arts-based solutions.

Work Details

The selected artist will be responsible for transforming four City-owned parking garages into welcoming and accessible spaces through creative placemaking and wayfinding elements. The specific tasks include: - Conducting site visits to assess conditions and user experience challenges. - Engaging with the community through workshops to gather input on designs reflecting local stories. - Designing, fabricating, and installing murals and wayfinding elements that enhance the parking experience. - Collaborating closely with City staff throughout the project to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. - Documenting the process through photography and reports, culminating in a public presentation of outcomes.

Period of Performance

The residency is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and will last for 12 months, concluding in August 2027.

Place of Performance

The work will be performed at four City-owned parking garages located in Durham, NC: Chapel Hill Street Garage, Corcoran Street Garage, Church Street Garage, and Durham Centre Garage.
