Background The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are conducting a joint research expedition in June 2026 in the Chukchi Sea to study the Pacific walrus population, which is affected by sea ice loss. The goal of this contract is to acquire logistical support services for walrus surveys in the Bering and Chukchi Seas, specifically to gather data on walrus distribution and location during the research expedition. Work Details The contractor shall provide logistical support services for up to three reconnaissance operations from June 4 to June 28, 2026. Each operation will follow the marginal ice zone, with distances from shore not exceeding 250 nautical miles. The contractor is required to verbally communicate walrus distribution information via satellite phone to the vessel after each survey. Data collected must include: - a) point locations for all walrus aggregations, - b) approximate number of walruses at each point, and - c) area searched to obtain these point locations. Payment will be made only for flights actually performed, with no minimum quantity guaranteed.
