Description
Primary Latest Change

The project entails roadway and pathway improvements intended to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians in an area congested with vehicle traffic. The project includes construction of a new paved bike path along the perimeter of the West Bluff Trailhead parking area and improvements to Long Avenue to accommodate an uphill bike lane. The project will construct a vehicle turnaround at the north/west terminus of the West Bluff Trailhead parking area to facilitate vehicle movements and relieve traffic congestion. Approximately 1,100 of new bike path will be constructed adjacent to the trailhead parking area. Several small retaining walls will be built to make room for the new path at the toe of the hillside. Existing light poles and electrical vehicle charging stations will be relocated to accommodate the bike path improvements. Long Avenue is approximately 1,200 in length and consists of two (2) travel lanes and no shoulders. Where existing roadway bench is sufficient, the project will widen the roadway to accommodate an uphill bike lane. Guardrails and chain-link fencing will be replaced along the roadway shoulder. An historic masonry drainage ditch along the roadway shoulder will be reconstructed. The intersection of Long Avenue and Marine Drive and adjacent plaza area behind the Warming Hut and neighboring buildings will be reconstructed to accommodate the bike path, gated access for administrative vehicles, and pedestrian safety improvements.
