Rt. 33 Widening Project – Major Road Expansion

A recent meeting document Hanover County - Agenda Packet - 2026-05-13 indicates a future potential acquisition The Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA) recently awarded $4,000,000 in regional funding to develop plans to widen Rt. 33 from the existing 4-lane section near the Henrico County line to Winns Church Road. The total cost of the project, which is identified in the County’s 10-Year Road Funding Plan, is estimated at $52.5M in current dollars. Execution of the attached project administration agreement between the County and the CVTA is required to begin the procurement process and access the funds. The project will be administered by Public Works. The agreement stipulates that the County will be responsible for all activities necessary to complete the noted phases, including design and construction to meet or exceed current standards. The initial $4M is for plan development (PE-Only), but the full project will require substantial construction, engineering, surveying, and potentially utility relocation services. This will likely result in multiple RFPs for engineering, design, construction, and related services as the project progresses.
