VEGA SP WFM PROJECT

Summary (Newest Update)

Background The Bureau of Reclamation Acquisition Management Division, Western Colorado Area Office (WCAO) is issuing a special notice of its intent to award a sole source service request to Colorado State University. This initiative aims to oversee tree hand and machine thinning work performed by contractors, as the Bureau lacks forestry expertise on staff. The primary goals are to decrease hazardous fuels by removing dead and beetle-infested trees and to reduce future wildland fire risk. Secondary goals include enhancing overall forest health, vigor, and structure of forest stands to maintain and improve habitat diversity for wildlife and migration corridors, as well as improving forest aesthetics. The project builds on previous efforts initiated in 2012 and continued in 2020, which focused on fire hazard mitigation and promoting forest health. Work Details The contractor will oversee tree thinning operations that include both hand and machine thinning methods. Specific tasks involve: 1. Removal of dead and beetle-infested trees to decrease hazardous fuels. 2. Implementation of treatments across multiple units within Vega State Park, focusing on areas previously identified for fire hazard risks. 3. Creation of defensible space around park rental cabins. 4. Improvement of forest health by reducing understory fuel loads and enhancing habitat diversity for wildlife. 5. Coordination with Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) to ensure compliance with state and federal forestry management practices. Period of Performance The contract will be performed over a specified period, continuing from previous projects initiated in 2020. Place of Performance Vega State Park, Mesa County, Colorado, including multiple treatment units within the park boundary.
