Primary Latest Change

The scope of this project includes removal and replacement of 136 individual pavement panels that measure 25 ft wide x 25 ft long x 24 inches deep, located at the intersection of the primary and secondary runways at Joint Base Charleston-Air Base. Replacement panels will be 25 ft wide x 25 ft long by 26 inches deep. All work will be during a 6 8-hour period between approximately 2300 hrs to 0700, Thursday through Monday. It is anticipated that the process will involve 3 primary activities each night, saw cutting, removal and installation of temporary panels, and placement of permanent panels. Each permanent panel will be constructed from fast setting concrete, capable of achieving aircraft traffic strength during a 3 4-hour cure period. The runway intersection shall open for daily aircraft traffic each morning. The project necessitates specialized capabilities and equipment, such as sawing and removal equipment for 24-inch pavement and volumetric mixers, sufficient in quantity to place a minimum of 50 cubic yards of fast setting concrete. Ancillary work includes milling and overlay of existing asphalt shoulders, installation of new runway centerline and edge lightings within the limits of work, installation of runway markings, pavement grinding for smoothness and pavement grooving.
