Background

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is seeking information for research and development related to device-assisted security features for future generations of U.S. currency. This Request for Information (RFI) aims to explore novel counterfeit deterrent technologies that are not currently in commercial use or the public domain.

Work Details

The BEP is interested in obtaining, testing, and evaluating technologies and materials that can be applied as user-interpreted counterfeit deterrent features on banknotes. Proposed features should be distinctive and difficult to replicate while being easily authenticated by the public using low-cost, widely available devices such as optical filters, magnifiers, laser pointers, LED flashlights, magnets, and cell phones. Interested parties are requested to submit preliminary samples along with a brief technical description of their proposed technologies for review. The evaluation will consider the effectiveness of these features as security measures, compatibility with design and production factors, durability, environmental acceptability, and other processing requirements.
