Background

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is seeking to gather information for research and development related to overt security features for future generations of U.S. currency. The goal of this Request for Information (RFI) is to explore technologies and materials that can serve as visual authentication features accessible to the public, enhancing counterfeit deterrence against various threats.

Work Details

The RFI invites submissions of technologies and materials that can be used as overt, visual authentication features on U.S. currency. These features should provide effective counterfeit deterrence against traditional printing, digital reproduction, and simulation by commercially available materials. Proposed features must be novel, not in commercial use or public domain, and should be easily authenticated by the public under various lighting conditions without requiring external devices. Submissions will be evaluated based on their effectiveness as security features, compatibility with design and production factors, durability, environmental acceptability, and other processing requirements. Interested parties are requested to submit preliminary samples along with a brief technical description.

Period of Performance

The RFI is open for responses until 2:00 PM Eastern Time on November 15, 2026.
