Background

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is seeking to explore novel technologies and materials that can serve as hidden machine-readable security features for future generations of U.S. currency. This Request for Information (RFI) aims to gather insights for research and development purposes, focusing on counterfeit deterrent features that are not currently available in the commercial market or public domain.

Work Details

The BEP is interested in obtaining, testing, and evaluating emerging technologies and materials that can be integrated into banknotes as hidden machine-readable features. The proposed features should meet the following criteria: 1. They must be difficult to discover on a banknote, even by experts. 2. Their functionality or detection mechanism should be hard to elucidate. 3. They must be readable by a highly discriminating standalone detection system. 4. They should resist simulation or duplication in terms of both material and response. Interested parties are requested to submit preliminary samples along with a brief technical description for initial screening.

Period of Performance

The RFI responses are requested by 2:00 PM Eastern Time on November 15, 2026.
