Summary (Newest Update)

Background The Rio Grande National Forest (RGNF), part of the USDA Forest Service, is seeking professional contractor services for macroinvertebrate analysis. This contract aims to support the agency's mission of managing and protecting national forests and grasslands while ensuring ecological integrity. The goal is to process and analyze macroinvertebrate samples collected from lotic environments in the Rocky Mountain region, contributing to environmental monitoring and assessment efforts. Work Details The contractor will be responsible for processing and analyzing up to 24 quantitative macroinvertebrate samples collected in 2026 and 2027. The work includes: - Sorting, identifying, and enumerating aquatic macroinvertebrate samples. Each sample consists of one kick net sample taken from fast-water units. - Processing the samples according to the standards outlined in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Standard Operating Procedure for Laboratory Identification and Enumeration (2017). - Preparing samples by sorting macroinvertebrates from sediment and debris, placing them into labeled vials with ethanol. - Utilizing a grid pattern in processing trays to ensure even distribution of material; processing all grids unless excessive organisms are present, in which case a random subsample will be taken. - Ensuring that at least 300 organisms are identified per sample or continuing subsampling until this count is reached. - Labeling vials appropriately for large or rare organisms processed separately. - Identifying all individuals under a dissecting microscope to the lowest possible taxonomic level using current taxonomic literature. Period of Performance The contract period is from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027. Place of Performance The work will be performed at the contractor's facility; no work will be conducted on USFS lands. Bidder Requirements This acquisition is set aside for small business concerns under the Small Business Administration (SBA) guidelines. Bidders must demonstrate expertise in entomology with a focus on Rocky Mountain species, possess necessary licenses or certifications relevant to laboratory analysis, and provide resumes for key personnel involved in the project.
