High Service Pump Variable Frequency Drive (VFD

Background

The City of Ames, Iowa, is seeking bids from qualified contractors to provide and install a variable frequency drive (VFD) for a high service pump (HSP) at the Ames Water Treatment Plant. The goal of this contract is to enhance the operation of the high service pump by allowing it to accelerate and decelerate smoothly, thereby preventing water hammer and limiting pressure swings in the water distribution system.

Work Details

The contractor will provide and install one variable frequency drive (VFD) for a 150 HP vertical turbine pump rated at 1,750 GPM at 230 ft of head. The installation includes all necessary connections, electrical equipment, and integration services to operate the VFD through the existing SCADA system. Specific requirements include: - The VFD must be suitable for industrial applications and comply with all applicable codes. - It should convert incoming power to an adjustable frequency and voltage to control pump speed. - The installation may utilize existing conduits but requires new rigid steel conduits for any new installations. - The VFD must be placed in the existing Motor Control Center (MCC) room near the HSP D panel. - It should include harmonic/noise filters as necessary and have adequate cooling capacity. - The VFD must allow operation in HAND, OFF, or AUTO modes via a control panel and integrate with PLC/SCADA systems for monitoring and control.

Period of Performance

The preferred start date for construction is July 15, 2026, with project completion anticipated in Fall 2026.

Place of Performance

The work will be performed at the Ames Water Treatment Plant located at 1800 E 13th Street, Ames, IA 50010.

Bidder Requirements

Bidders must have satisfactorily completed at least five projects of similar scope within the past five years. They are required to maintain a qualified crew throughout the project duration. Bidders must also possess an Iowa Department of Labor Contractor Registration Number. A performance and payment bond is required for bids exceeding $25,000.
