Background The project is initiated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to conduct geotechnical drilling for the reconstruction of County Road 34 (CR 34) in Washoe County, Nevada. The goal is to gather subsurface information necessary for the road's rehabilitation, which is located approximately 100 miles north of Reno, Nevada, near the Town of Gerlach. Work Details The scope of work includes conducting thirty-four shallow borings up to a depth of 5 feet or until refusal, alternating between two drive lanes. The drilling will be performed using a truck-mounted drill rig with a 6-inch outside diameter auger and will require a three-person crew consisting of a journeyman-level drill operator, a drill helper, and a laborer. The borings are intended to penetrate through the existing pavement and into underlying materials to collect bulk subgrade samples in 5-gallon buckets. The borings will be backfilled with imported pea gravel and topped with at least 5 inches of compacted asphalt cold patch. Traffic control will be managed by Washoe County, involving single lane closures and flaggers. Utility locates will be coordinated by FHWA personnel prior to drilling. The work is expected to take one day and must occur during daylight hours. Period of Performance The work is scheduled for June/July 2026.
