Background

The West Virginia Department of Health, Bureau for Public Health, has identified stroke as a major cause of death and disability in the state, ranking 7th in the nation for stroke prevalence. The grant aims to enhance stroke care and consultations for West Virginians lacking immediate access to neurologists by encouraging hospitals to invest in telehealth equipment and connectivity with major stroke centers.

Work Details

The grant will provide funding for at least twenty West Virginia hospitals to acquire and maintain telehealth equipment for neurological consultation services. Hospitals must contract with one of three designated neurology centers: Charleston Area Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital (Mountain Health Network), or WVU Medicine JW Ruby Memorial. The grantee will distribute $1 million among these centers and 27 hospitals, retaining 5% for administrative costs. The grantee will collect performance data from participating hospitals and neurology centers but will not conduct independent inspections.
