The West Virginia Department of Health (WVDH), Bureau for Public Health (BPH), Office of Environmental Health Services, Radiation, Toxics and Indoor Air Division (RTIA) is announcing funding availability for Radon awareness activities. The purpose of this funding is to enhance outreach and education efforts regarding radon exposure, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The grant aims to provide better protection from prolonged indoor exposure to radon gas, particularly in high-risk areas identified by the US EPA.

Work Details

The grant will fund activities that promote radon awareness, education, and testing in West Virginia counties, with priority given to those designated by the US EPA as having the highest risk of radon exposure. Eligible activities include: 1. **Radon Testing**: Providing testing kits to residents, promoting testing at daycare centers, and working with local officials on real estate transactions. 2. **Radon Mitigation**: Encouraging installation of mitigation systems in homes and daycare centers with elevated radon levels and collaborating with local building codes for new construction. 3. **Public Awareness**: Developing educational materials, conducting outreach programs, and forming coalitions with local governments and agencies. 4. **Other Activities**: Innovative radon prevention activities may also be funded.

Period of Performance

The funding period is from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.

Place of Performance

The contract will be performed statewide in West Virginia.

Bidder Requirements

Eligible applicants include all West Virginia local health departments and statewide non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations focused on lung health or lung cancer prevention. Individuals, private firms, citizen groups, and state and federal government units are not eligible for grants under this program.
