Background

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for conducting programs aimed at reducing the spread of invasive aquatic plants as mandated by the Legislature. The DEP's Invasive Aquatic Species Program is tasked with evaluating, managing, and preventing the spread of newly discovered invasive aquatic plants. York County has the highest number of known infestations in Maine and is at significant risk due to its numerous lakes. The DEP's Invasive Aquatic Species Unit, consisting of four full-time staff members, lacks the resources to adequately address all issues in York County, necessitating this contract for outreach and support.

Work Details

The contract involves providing outreach and education on aquatic invasive species in York County, coordinating surveys for invasive aquatic plants, and supporting local communities in preventing and responding to these species. The York County Invasive Aquatic Species Project (YCIASP), under the York County Soil and Water Conservation District, will conduct training and outreach, provide early detection through surveys, and assist the DEP in responding to new infestations.

Period of Performance

The contract is set to start on May 1, 2026, and end on December 31, 2026.

The services will be performed in York County, Maine.

Bidder Requirements

The selected vendor must have local knowledge of communities and lakes in York County, be skilled in identifying aquatic plants, and trained in survey techniques for invasive aquatic plants. Additionally, the vendor must have a proven track record of working with invasive species programs.
