Summary (Newest Update)

Background The US Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to identify qualified businesses capable of providing a microXRF geochemistry sensor. This sensor is intended for integration with the existing Geotek MSCL-XZ (Mark II) core logging system, which is part of the GMEG Science Center's Joint Hyperspectral Analyzer Work Station (JHAWS). The goal of this contract is to enhance the capabilities of the JHAWS system by enabling non-destructive, rapid, and spatially precise geochemical analyses of both soft-sediment and hard-rock core materials. Work Details The microXRF geochemistry sensor must meet the following specifications: 1. General Requirements: - Non-destructive rapid geochemical analysis of soft sediment and hard-rock drill core samples. - Compatibility with the existing JHAWS core logging system. - Integration with precision stage movements for geochemical element mapping at X-Y spatial resolutions better than 1 cm spot sizes. - Element detection range: Aluminum (Al) to Uranium (U). 2. X-Ray Source & Optics: - Voltage range: 4 kV to 50 kV. - 15 W sealed Rh or Mo target X-ray tube. - Changeable X-ray filter assembly for enhanced detection of key elements. - Large-area SDD detector with spectral resolution of ≥133 eV at Mn Kα. 3. Measurement Cell & Atmosphere: - Helium-flushed measurement cell for accurate low-energy element quantification. 4. Precision Stage Movement: - Down-core collimation: at least 0.5 mm. - Cross-core collimation: at least 5 mm. 5. Infrastructure Requirements: - No chiller required; compatible with standard laboratory power (US 110V). 6. Software & Data Processing: - Full control over X-ray settings, spectral analysis, and integration with existing Geotek software. 7. Delivery and Training: - On-site upgrade/installation by Geotek technicians at Moffett Field, CA, including training for USGS personnel. Place of Performance Moffett Field, California.
