Northern Research Station - measuring vegetation response to silvicultural treatments

Background

The Northern Research Station, part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), is focused on managing and monitoring forest ecosystems. This contract aims to measure vegetation response to silvicultural treatments, which is essential for assessing long-term timber management projects and ensuring the health of forest ecosystems. The contractor will support timber management activities through field sampling and data processing, following established research protocols. Work Details: The contractor will provide field vegetation sampling support for long-term silviculture studies, which includes: 1) Relocating and measuring 60 vegetation plots on two long-term red pine thinning studies on Chippewa National Forest; 2) Sampling vegetation on 1/5th acre tree plots, recording diameter at breast height (dbh) for all trees greater than 3.5 inches, mapping stem locations, and taking height measurements; 3) Transcribing field data into Excel files for submission to the Northern Research Station (NRS); 4) Relocating 170 vegetation field plots in adaptive silviculture studies at Cutfoot Experimental Forest in Minnesota; 5) Conducting tree seedling and vegetation plot measurements across various counties in Minnesota; 6) Providing technical consultation and assistance with long-term measurements as part of the silviculture research program. The contractor must ensure minimal environmental disturbance and adhere strictly to established protocols. Period of Performance: The contract will be performed over a period that includes a base year with approximately 333 hours of work, followed by two option years with approximately 600 hours each. Place of Performance: The work will primarily take place in various locations within Minnesota, including Chippewa National Forest, Cutfoot Experimental Forest, Itasca County, Aitkin County, Cass County, and St. Louis County.
