Description
Primary Latest Change

The Multi-Mission Dry Dock (M2D2) constructs a reinforced concrete pressure relieved multi-mission dry dock with caisson to support the USS FORD (CVN-78) class and USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) class nuclear aircraft carriers, as well as all fleet nuclear submarine classes. Construction utilizes upland groundwater cutoff walls and cofferdam systems and includes bulkheads, quay walls, stairs, enclosed utility galleries, electrical and mechanical utility tunnels, drainage tunnels, discharge tunnels and saltwater system intake(s), closed loop cooling system, flooding and dewatering systems, passenger and freight elevators, vessel mooring hardware, bollards, capstans, perimeter safety railing, temporary services support hangers and area lighting. Work also includes fire protection, information technology, automated control systems compatible with the Shipyard and Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA), dry dock process water collection system, and the process water/oily waste treatment system. Additionally, construction will include 40-foot gauge portal crane tracks, sanitary sewer, mechanical and electrical utilities, saltwater and freshwater fire protection, information and communications systems, and lighting. Procurement of equipment including a ship-style floating caisson gate and electrified 40-foot gauge portal cranes may also be included.

Summary (Newest Update)

Background The U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFACSYSCOM) is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for the Multi-Mission Dry Dock (M2D2) project as part of the Shipyard Infrastructure and Optimization Program (SIOP). This initiative aims to gather information from industry partners regarding their capabilities and innovative approaches for constructing a new dry dock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. The project is anticipated to support the USS FORD (CVN-78) and USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) class nuclear aircraft carriers, as well as all fleet nuclear submarine classes, over a projected timeline of 20 years with multiple mega-projects expected. Work Details The M2D2 will involve constructing a reinforced concrete pressure relieved multi-mission dry dock with caisson. Key construction tasks include: - Installation of upland groundwater cutoff walls and cofferdam systems. - Construction of bulkheads, quay walls, stairs, enclosed utility galleries, electrical and mechanical utility tunnels, drainage tunnels, discharge tunnels, and saltwater system intake(s). - Implementation of closed loop cooling systems, flooding and dewatering systems, passenger and freight elevators, vessel mooring hardware, bollards, capstans, perimeter safety railing, temporary services support hangers, and area lighting. - Fire protection systems and information technology infrastructure including automated control systems compatible with the Shipyard and Naval Base Kitsap Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). - Development of a dry dock process water collection system and process water/oily waste treatment system. - Installation of 40-foot gauge portal crane tracks along with sanitary sewer systems and mechanical/electrical utilities. - Provision for saltwater and freshwater fire protection systems as well as information and communications systems. - Procurement of equipment such as a ship-style floating caisson gate and electrified 40-foot gauge portal cranes. - Dredging activities to ensure adequate draft at the new dry dock and wharves. Period of Performance The planned award date for this project is anticipated in 2030 or earlier with a target construction duration of less than 8 years. Place of Performance The construction projects will be performed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.
