Tree removal, grubbing, and installation of stone dust for 1500 foot accessible trail extension

Summary (Newest Update)

Background The Town of Ware is cooperating with various organizations and municipalities to complete the Mass Central Rail Trail and accessible connector trails. This project aims to connect Grenville Park to the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) through newly acquired property. The construction project is located on land owned by the Town of Ware, which features a natural woodland area with gentle slopes. The goal is to create a ten-foot-wide connector trail that runs parallel to the Ware River, providing excellent views while minimizing environmental impacts. Work Details The contractor will be responsible for constructing approximately 1,500 feet of accessible trail, which includes: clearing and grubbing, removal of three inches of organic material, tree removal, grading, and filling with compacted stone dust material. The trail will have a width of ten feet with two-foot-wide shoulders and will be finished with three inches of mixed stone dust (3/8” minus crushed stone). Additionally, abutments for a 20-foot-long bridge crossing will need to be constructed. The contractor must ensure that the trail meets ADA compliance standards, including creating S-bends or switchbacks in three areas to maintain proper grades. Biodegradable sediment erosion barriers will be required in buffer zones. Period of Performance Construction must be completed by June 30, 2026. Place of Performance The work will take place in Ware, Massachusetts, specifically connecting Grenville Park to the Mass Central Rail Trail. Bidder Requirements Bidders must be in 'good standing' with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Departments of Revenue and Occupational Safety and Insurance. They are required to submit proof of General Liability and Workman’s Compensation insurance certificates with their bids. Any subcontractors hired by the bidder must be approved by the Town of Ware prior to the start of work.
