Summary (Newest Update)

Background The justification for Other Than Full and Open Competition (JOFOC) is issued for the Carbon Dioxide Removal by Ionic Liquid System - Integrated (CDRILS-I) contract, 80JSC026C0004. This action is driven by NASA's mission to ensure safety and efficiency in long-duration space missions, particularly for the mxEMU concept. The urgency of this project stems from the need to regenerate CO2 removed from spacesuits, as delays could significantly impact mission timelines and objectives, potentially risking astronaut health and safety. Work Details The primary task involves the regeneration of CO2 removed from spacesuits using Honeywell International's specialized technology. Honeywell has over seven years of experience with this technology, which includes exclusive knowledge and equipment necessary for integrating ionic liquid sorbent technology with an Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) processing loop. Their unique processes involve ionic liquid sorbents and hollow fiber membrane contactors essential for rapid CO2 removal in microgravity environments. Honeywell is deemed the only responsible source capable of performing this critical work due to their specialized expertise, which would be costly and time-consuming to replicate if another contractor were engaged. Place of Performance The work will primarily take place within NASA facilities as part of the mxEMU project.
