Background

The Forest Service is issuing this special notice to provide an opportunity for interested vendors to view the project site prior to the issuance of a full solicitation for the La Grande Ranger District 2026 Fuels Reduction Project. The goal of this project is to enhance forest health and resilience, thereby improving the safety and effectiveness of firefighters in suppressing wildfires on Forest Service land. This initiative aims to create strategic defensible spaces around critical areas such as the Cities of La Grande and Cove, Starkey Experimental Forest, La Grande Watershed, and adjacent private properties.

Work Details

The project encompasses various tasks including: 1) Lop and scatter thinning across 1,875 acres; 2) Thin and hand piling over 2,125 acres; 3) Thin and grapple piling on 1,276 acres; 4) Mechanical thinning (mastication) on 1,099 acres; and 5) Riparian Habitat Conservation Area (RHCA) thinning on 690 acres. Specific unit requirements include detailed information on average cut treatments, cutting restrictions, preferred spacing/flagging, estimated cut diameter exclusions, riparian buffers, etc. Each unit has specific criteria regarding species targeted for removal and tree density objectives.

Place of Performance

The work will take place within the La Grande Ranger District boundaries in multiple project areas including Sheep, Sandbox, Cove, Mt. Emily, Two Eagle, Meadow Creek thinning areas.
